Chinese superstitions – 迷信

A few a days ago I read an article in the Chinese news paper. The story was about “Why are Chinese so superstitious?“. Reading this article make me thing about the people (family and friends) around me. From those group the Chinese people are the most superstitious and me? I am a person who is sober from nature and not superstitious at all.

For many Chinese, superstition is just a question of hedging your bets just in case there’s something to it – rather like the traditional Chinese habit of subscribing to as many religions as possible.

For example: Everyone should refrain from using foul language and bad or unlucky words. Negative terms and the word “four”, sounding like the word for death, are not to be uttered. There are buildings without the 4th of the 14th floor. Number 14th is even worse, it means “dead for sure”. On the other hand number 8 is the luckiest number, because it sounds like the Chinese word “prosper”. It’s like Friday the 13th. Everyone accepted this, but why….?????? I don’t know…Do you know the answer?

Here is a list of some classic Chinese superstitions:

  • Shooting off firecrackers on Chinese New Year’s Eve is the Chinese way of sending out the old year and welcoming in the new.
  • The house should be cleaned before New Year’s Day.
  • Sweeping or dusting should not be done on New Year’s Day for fear that good fortune will be swept away, which if you think about it does make some sense.
  • Don’t build your house facing the north.
  • It is bad luck if your door or gate directly faces a road.

There still a lot….it will take ages to finish the list…Leave a comment if you have some superstitions that’s belong in the list above.

  1. There is no need to be anxious about finding quality road bike wheels without taking out a loan. For under $500, you can purchase wheels that are incredibly durable and long lasting, for example, the Mavic 2009 Ksyrium Equipe wheelset. There are many people that cannot even afford $500, and they have no reason to be anxious either, because there are even less expensive, high quality wheels, like the Mavic Aksium wheelset, which is under $400.

  2. I will be seeking tips on the best way to boost the level of feedback on my own blog, how do you reach your goals in doing this?

  3. thank you.. Nicely written
